We held our first outreach for this church plant 2 years ago. I gave an outreach lecture on the 500th Anniversary of a key event in the Reformation Day, Martin Luther nailing the 95 theses on the doors of the Wittenberg Church on October 31, 1517.
<br />
<br />
Recently on YouTube, an edited versions with subtitles have been uploaded. Enjoy.
<br />
They are bilingual: English with Mandarin translations.
<br />
<br />
The first lecture covers the origin of the Christian faith, what Jesus did, and why people follow Him. It then goes on to the origin of the Reformation and how men were trying to recapture the clear Gospel message and a submission to Scripture.

<tr><td style="text-align: center;">As I write this, the wind is howling outside as another typhoon is passing through.<br />
<br />
After many years of delightful and sometimes difficult ministry, seeing people become Christians and grow in their faith, we had to say goodbye to our beloved church in Taipei, so that we could begin laboring in a new church plant in the rural Yilan County using a different language. We had been commuting to Taipei for the Lord's Day worship while doing outreach Bible studies and events in Yilan. But the exciting day finally came when we started our Lord's Day worship service. As I post this series of pictures, we have now been meeting for worship at Riverside Church (<a href="https://kbchurch.tw/">https://kbchurch.tw/</a>) for four months. If you go to <a href="https://fb.me/kbchurch.tw">https://fb.me/kbchurch.tw</a> you can find videos of the worship service, the sermon, and the Sunday afternoon Bible studies. My sermons are in Taiwanese, while the Bible studies are a mix of Mandarin and Taiwanese.<br />

I periodically teach on what God's Word says about itself. Does it contain a record of man's experience with God as Karl Barth claimed? Or does it contain God's Word down to every word choice: singular or plural, masculine or feminine pronouns?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt28b7HEm-TiTwTn80ustkvSO3jOiYPKKqLgFGzLOKwvjNU6hv7XyN6vAGs1f1idpXWvpf_5UMXeIonV0ajwK08AD1nD1Eh-pA2Z7OSgn_FhSmkIeqHF97Z3kLiMG7_6sGRLQybVKvfz0n/s1600/still_life_with_open_bible_candlestick_and_novel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="267" data-original-width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt28b7HEm-TiTwTn80ustkvSO3jOiYPKKqLgFGzLOKwvjNU6hv7XyN6vAGs1f1idpXWvpf_5UMXeIonV0ajwK08AD1nD1Eh-pA2Z7OSgn_FhSmkIeqHF97Z3kLiMG7_6sGRLQybVKvfz0n/s1600/still_life_with_open_bible_candlestick_and_novel.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, system-ui, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
Rather than approaching the Bible based on our own constructed theories, it is good to consider what the Bible claims about itself, what Jesus claims about the Bible and what the Apostles claim about the Bible.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, system-ui, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
You might disagree with<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline; font-family: inherit;"> them, but we have to say this is the Bible's testimony about itself.</span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; display: inline;">
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
So what does the Bible say about itself?</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Even within all these different prophets of the Old Testament who have different writing styles, they say "Thus says the Lord."</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Or look at the New Testament writers:</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
The testimony of the Apostle Paul: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 1 Timothy 3:16-17</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
The testimony of Apostle Peter: "Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit." 2 Peter 1:20-21</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
And the Apostle Peter also testified that Paul's writings were Scripture: "... just as our dear brother Paul also wrote with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable men distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction." 2 Peter 3:15-16<br />
Paul's writings are treated as equivalent to the other Scriptures.</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Now how do Jesus and Paul treat the Scripture? They make their argument based on every single word, even whether the word choice was singular or plural. Jesus states "and the Scripture cannot be broken."</div>
<div style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
That means that although the Holy Spirit used individual men to write Scripture and they wrote in their own styles, that every single word in the Bible is inspired by God even to whether the word is singular or plural.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px;">There is no half-way point. If you want to except anything in the Bible, you have to accept it all. Otherwise, it is just a collection of opinions of man and can be thrown away.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: xx-small;">All Scripture quotes are taken from the NIV1984 translation.</span></div>

Eric Pilson, and his family, along with Taiwanese coworker, Michael Liu, are planting a church (<a href="http://reformed.tw/">http://reformed.tw</a>) in a mountainside community of Sam-gia̍p ("Three Gorges"), a more distant suburb of Taipei City. This town is home to National Taipei University and has been developed with tall apartment buildings and broad avenues, somewhat reminiscent of parts of Manhattan in New York City, but surrounded by mountains. I had identified this area for church planting several years ago, but did not have anyone to move into the community. Eric and Annie Pilson moved there last year. Michael Liu moved soon after. He had been serving in an evangelistic ministry in Indonesia but had moved to Taiwan to finish his seminary degree at <a href="http://crts.edu/">China Reformed Theological Seminary</a>. <br />

On Saturday, the church plant hosted a community outreach. My daughters, Faith and Ashlyn, volunteered to teach how to make apple pie. While the pies were in the oven and people were eating two pies that Ashlyn had made on Friday, Eric gave the guests a brief introduction to the church and a warm invitation for them to visit the ministry center. They also invited them to a children's summer camp to be held in August. The church core group has been meeting in a weekly Bible study, but are planning to start Lord's Day worship in September, after a lot of outreach events in August.<br />

<br />Please click on the following link to find out how to support this church plant. Unlike starting churches in America, there are not many churches to create a support network for church planting. Taiwanese church planters often have little salary while the spaces to rent for worship services are very expensive. <a href="http://www.reformed.tw/en/give">http://www.reformed.tw/en/give</a><br /><br />

<p>
Dr. Joel Linton received his doctorate in applied theology (D.Min.) from Birmingham Theological Seminary after five years of study in the doctoral program. His dissertation research topic was starting and sustaining healthy rural churches. The above picture shows Dr. Linton with his dissertation committee in full academic regalia. Dr. Jim Maples on the left was his advisor. The study of the health of rural churches is important because Christians in recent years have focused much more energy and resources on urban church planting, yet approximately half of the world's population still live in rural areas. In the dissertation rural church planting was examined in three mission fields in Asia: Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan, together with general works on church health. Further, field research was done on rural churches in five counties of northwest Alabama as well as one county in Taiwan. Hopefully, other researchers can build on this academic work. The Lord willing, this work will also be applied to new church plants in rural areas of Taiwan beginning in the fall of 2016.

That takes a lot of traveling.<br />
<br />
I am blessed that my family cheerfully travels with me. My daughters do their best with home school while traveling grabbing wifi spots to login to their online classes. Judy keeps everyone organized.<br />
<br />
Please pray for our support raising. We do need more churches to partner with us.<br />
<br />
This time back in the US, there is another full-time labor: finishing my doctoral dissertation. I am researching the state and needs of rural and small town churches. For part of the study, I developed a survey questionnaire covering many different issues churches deal with. In five counties in northwest Alabama, a random sample of 200 churches out of over rural 700 were selected to receive questionnaires. Three friends in Taiwan sent out surveys to 50 rural churches in I-lan County, Taiwan. I've gotten some responses but not enough. I have begun phase 2 of follow-up calling and attempting to meet in person to get a higher response rate. But I will not have time to track down all 200 churches. So do please pray that pastors will take the 15 minutes to fill out the surveys.<br />
<br />
Then there is the actual writing of the thesis.<br />
<br />
It is hard to attend to all of the details.<br />

An evangelistic ministry based out of Taipei called "From Doubting to Believing" has their main office in a district of Taipei similar to Manhattan's SoHo district. They do not do crusades like Billy Graham did. Rather they work one-on-one and in small classes of people introduced by their friends or family members. These classes are very professionally done and give a more in depth presentation of the Gospel, the Bible and basic Christianity. Lesson Seven uses Judy's testimony. This material was first developed by the wife of a business executive of the food company: Quaker Taiwan.</div>

Jesus' parable about the wise and foolish builder, and 2. Jesus' resurrection from the dead. Both of these events are told in a simple and effective way in Taiwanese.<p>
In the narration, there is a conversation between and non-Christian and a Christian where the Christian is trying to share the Gospel with the non-Christian.<p>
